Kolam is a short to medium-grain rice that is soft, naturally sweet, and easy to cook. Mostly grown in Maharashtra and Gujarat, it is widely used as a daily rice due to its affordability and consistent quality. Though not as long as Basmati, Kolam rice offers a pleasant taste, quick cooking time, and light aroma, making it perfect for lunch, dal-rice, khichdi, and other homely dishes.
